By far, the question I get the most when it comes to points and miles is what credit card(s) do I have. Depending on the person’s knowledge of the credit card point game, I get a ton of glossed over looks when I explain what purpose each card serves and when and where I use each one.
American Express Platinum ($550 Annual Fee) – I think of this card as my “perks” card as it’s definitely not my everyday use card. Everyone values perks differently but I’ve highlighted where I see the most value.
- Delta Skyclub Access – I’m a delta loyalist and it is very rare that I’m flying anything other than Delta on a domestic flight. With the Amex Platinum, you get complimentary access to Delta Skyclub Lounges as long as you are flying Delta that same day.
- 5X Points – on flights booked directly with the airlines or through Amex Travel. When I’m paying for flights, or even paying the taxes and fees on an award ticket, this is my go to card. 5 points for every $1 spent, it’s a not brainer.
- $200 Annual Travel Credit – Though Amex rules state that this credit is for things like baggage/change/seat fees, it is possible to buy gift cards that qualify for the credit. Each airline is different but as I stated I’m a Delta flyer, I purchase 4 $50 delta gift cards annually to use my credit.
- Rental Car Status – I live in New York City, well Brooklyn, but either way I don’t have a car. The Amex Platinum gives you executive status with National Rental Car and perks with Avis like an one vehicle class upgrade and up to a 25% discount. I’m also president’s circle with Hertz as I’m a Platinum Medallion Member with Delta. Having status with 3 different rental car companies allows me to compare prices and not having having to feel super loyal to one company.
- Hotel Status – The Amex Platinum also gives you Marriott Gold and Hilton Gold Status. I’m primarily a Hilton loyalist but depending on locations, having a little status with Marriott doesn’t hurt.
There are plenty of other perks that other people might find valuable but the ones above are the reason I keep the card.
American Express Gold ($250 Annual Fee)- With the recent re-vamp of the gold card, this has become my daily card.
- 4X Points – at grocery stores and restaurants. On a daily basis, between my wife and I, are expenses are going to fall in this category. This multiplier is the best (right now at least) for this spending category and it doesn’t hurt that Amex points are pooled so all the spend on the gold and platinum cards go into the same “bucket”
- $100 Annual Travel Credit – Just like the platinum card, I do the exact same thing with the gold card. I purchase 2 $50 gift cards on Delta to use up the credit.
